Last season, Bayer Leverkusen did the impossible. They went unbeaten in the Bundesliga. They won the league and the DFB-Pokal. They became the first team other than Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga in over a decade. And they did it playing some of the most exciting football Germany has ever seen.

Now comes the hard part: doing it again.

What's Different This Season

Defending a title is psychologically different from winning one. When you're chasing, every game is a chance to close the gap. When you're defending, every game is a chance to lose what you have. The pressure shifts. Opponents are more motivated against the champions. Every team raises their game.

Xabi Alonso has managed this transition well. Leverkusen's tactical approach hasn't changed dramatically — they still press high, transition quickly, and play with intensity. But the opposition has adapted. Teams now sit deeper against Leverkusen, denying the spaces that powered their counter-pressing last season.

The Key Numbers

Leverkusen's xG numbers remain strong. They're still creating high-quality chances at an elite rate. Their defensive numbers have dipped slightly — inevitable when opponents are more conservative and look to exploit counter-attacks. But the underlying quality is still there.

The biggest concern is squad depth. Leverkusen's first eleven is world-class, but their bench isn't as deep as Bayern's or Dortmund's. Injuries to key players have exposed this weakness. When three or four starters are out simultaneously, the drop-off in quality is more noticeable than at rival clubs.

Xabi Alonso's Management

Alonso has been the key factor in Leverkusen's success. His ability to motivate, his tactical intelligence, and his man-management have been exceptional. He's been linked with every major managerial vacancy in Europe — Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool. The question hanging over Leverkusen isn't whether they can win the title, but whether they can keep their manager.

If Alonso stays, Leverkusen have a genuine chance of defending the title. His tactical adjustments during matches are among the best in European football. He reads games brilliantly and makes substitutions that change outcomes.

Can They Do It Again?

Going unbeaten again is virtually impossible. But winning the title? The data says they're in the race. Their underlying numbers are close to last season's levels. Bayern are stronger but inconsistent. Dortmund are talented but young. Stuttgart have been excellent but lack depth.

The Bundesliga title race is the most competitive it's been in 15 years. And that's partly because of what Leverkusen proved last season: you don't need to be Bayern to win in Germany. That genie is out of the bottle now. The question is whether Leverkusen can ride it for one more season.
