Bernardo Silva's Barcelona Obsession is Holding City Hostage

By Patrick Dunn · March 19, 2026

City Can't Keep Dancing to Bernardo's Tune

Here's the thing about Bernardo Silva: he's brilliant. No denying it. The man pulled the strings as Manchester City clinched the Treble in 2023, bagging 7 goals and 8 assists across all competitions, including that brace against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinal. He’s a two-way force, a maestro with a relentless work rate. But his annual flirtation with Barcelona? It’s getting tiresome. Every summer, it's the same song and dance. "I love City, but Barcelona..." Come on.

Last year, he signed a contract extension through 2026, supposedly putting an end to the speculation. Yet here we are again, with reports from Spain suggesting a €50 million release clause is now active. Fifty million Euros for one of the best midfielders in Europe? That's a steal in today's market. Especially considering Declan Rice went for £105 million to Arsenal last summer. City, frankly, got played if that clause is legitimate and Barcelona comes knocking.

Barcelona's Financial Tightrope Walk

And let's be real, Barcelona's financial situation remains about as stable as a house of cards in a hurricane. They're still pulling economic levers and selling off future revenue streams just to register players. Just last month, reports emerged that they needed to offload players to even make new signings official. So how exactly are they planning to conjure up €50 million for Silva, plus his considerable wages, without selling Raphinha or Frenkie de Jong? It feels like another one of their grand, often unfulfilled, transfer sagas.

Silva, to his credit, has always performed when he's on the pitch for City. He scored 6 goals and added 9 assists in the Premier League this past season, showing no dip in commitment. But this constant uncertainty, this lingering "will he, won't he" narrative, it can't be good for squad morale. Pep Guardiola needs players who are 100% invested, not those with one eye constantly on a move to Catalonia. City shelled out £43 million for him back in 2017, and he's delivered countless trophies. But loyalty, it seems, only goes one way in modern football.

Time for City to Move On

My hot take? City should just let him go. If Barcelona can somehow scrounge together the €50 million, take the money. It's time for City to stop accommodating a player who clearly dreams of playing elsewhere. They’ve proven they can replace talent. Remember when everyone panicked about losing Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona last summer? City still won the league, and Phil Foden stepped up big-time, scoring 19 league goals. They found solutions.

Fifty million Euros is a good chunk of change that could be reinvested into a hungry, committed talent. Someone who genuinely wants to be at the Etihad. City doesn't need players whose hearts are already halfway to Camp Nou. They need players who are obsessed with winning *for Manchester City*. And if Bernardo isn't that, then he's a distraction they don't need.

Prediction: Barcelona won't be able to afford Silva this summer, and we'll be having this exact same conversation next June, much to everyone's exasperation.
