Real talk: the 49ers are staring down a cliff edge in 2026. General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have built a consistent winner, making three NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowls since 2019. But the bill for that success is coming due. They've got 20 players currently under contract for 2026, and only about $20 million in projected cap space. That's not a lot of wiggle room.

The Big Names Facing Decisions

Let's start with the obvious: Brandon Aiyuk. The wide receiver is currently playing on his fifth-year option, earning $14.124 million in 2025. He's been a monster, logging back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, with 1,342 yards in 2023. He wants top-tier receiver money, probably north of $28 million annually. Can the Niners afford that with Deebo Samuel already on the books for $24.1 million in 2025? It's tough. If they extend Aiyuk, someone else has to give. My money is on Samuel being the odd man out if Aiyuk gets his deal. You don't pay two receivers that kind of cash in a run-first offense.

Then there's Christian McCaffrey. The guy is a machine, leading the league in rushing in 2023 with 1,459 yards and 21 total touchdowns. He's signed through 2027, but his cap hit jumps to $14.4 million in 2026. He'll be 30 that year, which is ancient for a running back. His production hasn't dipped, but the age curve is real. Do they try to restructure, or even consider a trade if a younger back emerges? I don't see them moving him, not after what he's done for this offense. But that cap number is a monster.

Defensive Line Dominoes

The defensive line is another puzzle. Nick Bosa is locked up long-term, and deservedly so after his 18.5-sack season in 2022. But Arik Armstead, who's been a stalwart for years, carries a $26.8 million cap hit in 2026. He'll be 33. He only played 12 games in 2023, though he still managed five sacks. That's a lot of money for an aging interior lineman who's starting to battle injuries. I think Armstead is a prime candidate for a pay cut or even release if he doesn't agree to one. They'll need that cash to re-sign some of their younger talent.

Tashaun Gipson, their starting safety, will be a free agent. He had 39 tackles and an interception in 2023. Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw anchor the middle, but the secondary needs some attention. Charvarius Ward is signed through 2027, but his cap hit climbs to $18.5 million in 2026. He's a good corner, but is he $18 million good? That's the kind of question Lynch has to ask himself.

Purdy's Payday Looms

Here's the kicker: Brock Purdy. He's currently playing on a rookie deal, making just over $1 million in 2025. He led the league in passer rating in 2023 at 113.0 and threw for 4,280 yards. He's proven he can win games and manage the offense. His contract expires after the 2025 season. In 2026, he's going to command a massive extension, likely in the $50 million per year range. That's the elephant in the room. Every move they make in 2025 and 2026 will be with Purdy's inevitable extension in mind.

They've got to clear space. My bold prediction: the 49ers will trade Deebo Samuel before the 2026 season to free up cap space for Aiyuk and Purdy. It's a tough call, but Aiyuk's game is more traditional and perhaps more sustainable long-term.
